Margibi County – The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) has taken a significant step toward realizing the country’s renewable energy ambitions, with the Managing Director Hon. Mohammed M. Sherif leading a high-level site visit to inspect ongoing construction work at Liberia’s first-ever solar power farm.
Located in Margibi County, the 20-megawatt (MW) solar farm is a landmark energy project expected to be commissioned by the end of 2025.
During the visit, Managing Director Sherif was accompanied by his deputies for Administration, Technical Services, and Operations, as they assessed progress and engaged with engineers and project staff on the ground.
“This project represents a historic milestone not only for LEC but for the entire country,” said Sherif. “It marks our commitment to sustainable, affordable, and clean energy for Liberia.”
The solar farm, once completed, will be the largest renewable energy installation in Liberia’s history and is expected to significantly boost the country’s electricity supply, especially in rural areas with limited access to power.
It forms part of LEC’s broader strategy to diversify energy sources, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and expand access to electricity nationwide.
Officials described the site visit as both encouraging and timely, noting that construction is progressing steadily and in line with key milestones. The project is being implemented with support from international partners and development agencies committed to green energy in Africa.
With Liberia still facing widespread power challenges, the solar farm is viewed as a game-changer for national development and economic growth.
LEC’s leadership reaffirmed its dedication to delivering a reliable and sustainable power grid for all Liberians, as the country takes bold steps toward energy independence and climate resilience.
