River Gee County — A team from the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) has arrived in River Gee County to evaluate and address the ongoing electricity shortages that have affected the area.
The process seeks to enhance the availability and dependability of power for local residents.
The power outages, primarily caused by failures within the electrical infrastructure, began in early March 2025 and have sparked concerns regarding economic growth and the overall quality of life for residents.
These power interruptions have disrupted everyday activities and negatively influenced local businesses and public services.
Located in southern Liberia, River Gee is one of the nation’s 15 counties, consisting of ten administrative districts, with Fish Town as its capital.
According to the 2022 Census, the population of the county stands at 124,653, making it one of Liberia’s least populated regions. River Gee was established in 2000.
Residents of Fish Town had their first experience of electricity on July 5, 2023 but for over four months, the capital and its surrounding areas have faced complete darkness at night, with only solar lamps along the main street, installed by former President George Weah, providing some light.
The Liberia Electricity Corporation, founded in 1973, is a public utility dedicated to generating and supplying reliable and affordable electricity throughout the country, while also maintaining financial viability and planning for future growth. LEC aims to utilize electricity as a catalyst for socio-economic development in Liberia.
