The House of Representatives has extended its special session by an additional week, beginning Friday, September 20, to Thursday, September 27, 2024, respectively.
The House, in a release dated September 19, 2024, stated that the body concurred with the Liberian Senate for the extension.
According to the Senate’s certificate of extension, the recast budget and other time-sensitive instruments, including integrity matters, are expected to be acted upon.
Recently, the Legislature recalled itself for a period of three weeks, commencing on Thursday, August 19, 2024, until Thursday, September 19, 2024, to act upon several pieces of legislation of time sensitivity and integrity, along with the submitted draft recast budget.
The reconvening of the Legislature is pursuant to Article 32B of the Liberian Constitution, which states that “the President shall, on his own initiative or upon receipt of a certificate signed by at least one-fourth of the total membership of each house and proclamation, extend a regular session of the Legislature beyond the date for adjournment or call a special extraordinary session of that body to discuss or act upon matters of national emergencies and concerns. When the extension or call is at the request of the Legislature, the proclamation shall be issued not later than forty-eight hours after receipt of the certificate by the President.”
