LEITI Secures Strong Audit Ratings, Advances 2026 Work Plan and Stakeholder Engagement

The Multi-Stakeholder Group (MSG) of the Liberia Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (LEITI) on Friday, February 13, 2026, held a high-level meeting at the LEITI Secretariat in Monrovia, focusing on operational updates, audit performance, and strategic planning for fiscal year 2026.

The meeting brought together representatives of government, civil society and the private sector to review the Secretariat’s financial and operational performance, consider its draft 2026 work plan, and receive updates on key governance and accountability initiatives.

Strong Audit and Performance Scores

During the session, the Secretariat presented the General Auditing Commission’s Audit Recommendation Implementation Report on LEITI. According to officials, LEITI obtained a “fully compliant” status from the General Auditing Commission, achieving a score of 82 percent.

In addition, the Secretariat reported a mid-term score of 83.2 percent under its Performance Management and Compliance System (PMCS), described as a “very good” rating. The results were presented as evidence of improvements in internal controls, reporting standards and institutional accountability.

The MSG also received updates on LEITI’s ongoing collaboration with the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission regarding investigations into two suspected corruption cases flagged in LEITI’s 16th report.

Officials of LEITI said the coordination reflects growing inter-agency efforts to strengthen oversight within Liberia’s extractive sector.

2026 Work Plan and Global Engagement

Following extensive deliberations, the MSG granted provisional approval for activities outlined in LEITI’s fiscal year 2026 work plan.

The approval authorizes the Secretariat to proceed with broader stakeholder consultations outside the MSG, in line with the 2023 Standard of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).

Among other decisions, the MSG selected Liberia’s delegation to attend the EITI Global Conference scheduled for June 2026 in the Philippines. The conference is expected to convene government officials, civil society leaders and industry actors from resource-rich countries worldwide to discuss transparency and accountability in the extractive industries.

The MSG also approved plans to produce Liberia’s 17th and 18th EITI Reports, covering fiscal years 2024 and 2025, respectively. These reports will continue to disclose revenues, contracts and other data related to Liberia’s mining, oil and forestry sectors.

In a further move to strengthen public engagement, the MSG endorsed the Secretariat’s proposal to expand its data visualization and outreach activities, aimed at making extractive sector information more accessible to citizens.

Women’s Workshop Strengthens Civic Engagement

In a related development, on Thursday, February 12, the LEITI Secretariat, in collaboration with Sustain Earth Equity Defenders (SEED), hosted a workshop for more than 30 women representing diverse civil society organizations and non-governmental organizations.

The session focused on enhancing participants’ understanding of data contained in LEITI reports and strengthening women’s participation in natural resource governance. Organizers said the initiative was designed to improve advocacy efforts and foster closer collaboration between LEITI and women-led organizations.

Participants described the workshop as an “eye-opener” and welcomed the opportunity to deepen their engagement in extractive sector oversight.

They called for improvements to Liberia’s fiscal and institutional frameworks to ensure that natural resource revenues better serve the interests of all Liberians.

At the conclusion of the workshop, the women developed and presented a framework to the LEITI Secretariat outlining next steps to sustain their involvement in the country’s natural resource sector.

Advancing Transparency

The twin engagements-the MSG meeting and the women’s workshop- underscore LEITI’s ongoing efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability and citizen participation in Liberia’s extractive industries.

As the country prepares its next cycle of reporting and international engagement, stakeholders say sustained collaboration across institutions and civil society will be essential to maintaining progress in resource governance.
