The Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has suspended the unauthorized “expedited connection service fee” charged by the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, LERC clarified that the fee of US$150.00, which LEC had been imposing for expedited electrical connections, was not authorized under the Commission’s regulations. LERC has mandated that the LEC immediately cease the collection of unauthorized fee from customers.
The announcement came as part of LERC’s broader investigation into the legality of the expedited connection fee. The Commission is scrutinizing the basis on which LEC charged this fee, questioning whether it complied with regulatory standards.
Atty. Kla-Edward Toomey, II, Acting Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring the fairness and transparency of utility charges. “We are committed to ensuring that electricity services are affordable and accessible to all Liberians,” Toomey said, emphasizing the Commission’s dedication to upholding consumer rights.
In response to the suspension, LERC has called for a meeting with LEC’s management to discuss the matter further and ensure compliance with the Commission’s decision. Additionally, the Commission has issued a warning to all utilities, urging them to refrain from imposing unauthorized fees for services. LERC affirmed that it would continue to monitor utility practices and take necessary action against any violations.
