Monrovia, Liberia | October 17, 2025 | As neighboring Ivory Coast (La Côte d’Ivoire) gears up for its crucial presidential and legislative elections scheduled for October 25, 2025, the Government of Liberia, through the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS), has ramped up security along its shared borders with four Northern and southeastern counties.
The affected counties include; Nimba, Grand Gedeh, River Gee, and Maryland, all bordering Ivory Coast and are often considered sensitive zones during periods of political transition in the region.
Speaking to reporters, Dennis B. Sartee, Director for Operations at the Liberia Immigration Service, stated that the deployment is part of a strategic effort to reinforce security, prevent illegal cross-border movements, and mitigate any potential spillover of unrest during Ivory Coast’s election period.
“The security operation is a proactive measure designed to ensure peace and order, not only within Liberia’s territory but also to support regional stability,” Director Sartee said.
Recent photographs revealed a noticeable increase in armed personnel stationed in all of the counties bordering locations, where officers have established visible checkpoints and patrol posts.
As part of the preparations, the LIS conducted a routine muster exercise earlier this week in Grand Gedeh County, during which deployed officers received final briefings and operational guidelines.
The deployment was welcomed by local authorities. Davidson Barlee, the Development Officer for Grand Gedeh County praised the initiative, noting it demonstrates the government’s commitment to protecting national borders and maintaining internal stability.
“The heightened security presence sends a strong message that Liberia is serious about safeguarding its sovereignty and supporting peace in the region,” Barlee remarked.
However, Liberia and Ivory Coast share a long and often porous border, making border management a key concern, especially during politically volatile periods.
With Ivory Coast heading into a pivotal election, Liberia is maintaining close surveillance and coordination with regional partners to prevent potential election-related disturbances from crossing into its territory.
The Liberia Immigration Service has reaffirmed its dedication to national and regional peace, pledging to remain vigilant as the Ivorian election approaches.
Authorities urge residents in the border counties to cooperate with security personnel and report any suspicious activities.
