Congo Town, Monrovia – The Government of Liberia in partnership with China Aid has officially broken ground for the construction of two overpass bridges along the Tubman Boulevard, a project aimed at easing the growing traffic congestion in Monrovia.
The ceremony, held in Congo Town, was graced by President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, the Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, and Public Works Minister Roland Giddings, among other senior officials.
Speaking at the event, President Boakai assured Liberians that his administration is committed not only to infrastructure development but also to long-term sustainability.
“We will not just build, but we will also maintain what we are building,” President Boakai emphasized.
Chinese Ambassador to Liberia hailed the project as another milestone in the strong bilateral relations between Liberia and China, noting that the construction of the two overpasses will significantly improve the country’s road network and urban mobility.
Minister of Public Works Roland Giddings described the initiative as “a historic step forward” in addressing Liberia’s infrastructural bottlenecks, adding that the ministry is working closely with partners to ensure the project is completed on time and to standard.
Meanwhile, residents of Monrovia and daily commuters along the Tubman Boulevard expressed excitement over the project. Many believe the overpasses will drastically reduce traffic congestion in the area, which has long been a challenge for motorists and pedestrians alike.
The construction of the overpass bridges is a two year duration project that is expected to begin immediately following the groundbreaking and will form part of a broader strategy by the Boakai administration to modernize Liberia’s road infrastructure and improve the overall quality of urban life.
