During the annual Treaty Event at the IAEA’s 68th General Conference over the weekend, Liberia reaffirmed its commitment to nuclear safety and security by signing six key legal instruments under the IAEA’s framework.
According to a release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs dated September 21, 2024, the Resident Representative of Liberia to the IAEA, Youngor Sevelee Telewoda, officially deposited five of these instruments.
Convention on Early Notification of a Nuclear Accident: Established in 1986 after the Chornobyl disaster, this convention creates a system for notifying countries about nuclear accidents that may have international radiological implications.
Convention on Assistance in the Case of a Nuclear Accident or Radiological Emergency: Also adopted in 1986 following Chornobyl, this framework facilitates international cooperation for prompt assistance during nuclear accidents or emergencies.
Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS): This convention commits parties operating land-based nuclear power plants to uphold high safety standards, requiring them to report on their safety measures for peer review.
Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) and its 2005 Amendment: These instruments establish legal obligations for the physical protection of nuclear materials used peacefully, including measures against theft and international cooperation in such incidents.
The annual Treaty Event, organized by the IAEA’s Office of Legal Affairs, aims to encourage global adherence to critical multilateral treaties overseen by the IAEA Director General.
