Liberia Council of Churches Condemns Alleged Same-Sex Marriage at S.T. Nagbe United Methodist Church

Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) has issued a strong condemnation of an alleged same-sex marriage ceremony said to have taken place recently at the S.T. Nagbe United Methodist Church in Monrovia.

‎In a statement released Tuesday, August 12, 2025, Rev. Amminadab K. John, Chairman on Evangelism for the LCC, described the reported ceremony as “unbiblical and unlawful,” asserting that it violates the Holy Scriptures, the Constitution of Liberia, and what he called the “deeply held moral values of the Liberian people.”

‎“The Holy Bible is explicit in its teachings regarding sexual relations and marriage,” Rev. John stated, citing scriptures from Genesis, Leviticus, and Romans to support the Council’s position. “This act undermines the moral and spiritual foundation upon which Liberia stands.”

‎The LCC urged all churches, pastors, and believers to reaffirm their commitment to biblical teachings on marriage, calling on the government to uphold existing laws “in defense of moral order” and encouraging Christians across the country to pray for repentance and restoration.

‎In response to the allegations, the LCC said it had engaged Bishop Samuel J. Quire of the United Methodist Church in Liberia. According to the Council, Bishop Quire affirmed in a formal communication that the UMC Liberia upholds the biblical definition of marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

‎The LCC further called on the United Methodist Church in Liberia to publicly display its Book of Discipline or Articles of Faith to help dispel what it referred to as “rumours in the public space” that may damage the Church’s moral standing.

‎“This is not a time for public disorder,” Rev. John emphasized. “It is a time for unity among Christian leaders in defense of biblical truth.”

‎The Council also reminded the public that Liberia, while constitutionally secular, has a Christian heritage that must be protected. It cited Psalm 33:12: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.”

‎The LCC concluded its statement by reaffirming its commitment to the moral and spiritual development of Liberia through “witnessing, advocacy, and service that support unity, social justice, good governance, and national reconciliation.”
