Liberia Marks 61 Years of School Leadership Body with Call for Stronger Principals

School leaders from across Monrovia gathered on Tuesday to commemorate the 61st anniversary of the National Association of Liberian School Principals (NALSP), alongside a national symposium focused on advancing sustainable school leadership as a pathway to quality education.

The event brought together principals, education stakeholders, and policymakers in a renewed push to strengthen leadership capacity at the school level—widely regarded as a critical driver of improved learning outcomes nationwide.

Delivering the keynote address, Liberia’s Minister of Education, Jarso Maley Jallah, underscored the central role of school leadership in shaping educational success.

“Improving education outcomes depends not only on policies and resources, but also on strong leadership within schools. While teachers shape learning in the classroom, principals shape the conditions that allow effective teaching and learning to happen,” the Ministry said in a statement delivered by the Minister.

Her remarks reflect a growing consensus among education experts that effective principals are essential to fostering accountability, supporting teachers, and creating environments conducive to student achievement.

In recognition of her contributions to the sector, the NALSP conferred on the Minister an Honorary Membership and the Lifetime Transformative Educator Award.

The honors were presented by former NALSP President Benjamin Wehye and current President Darric Dennis, who praised her leadership and commitment to strengthening Liberia’s education system.

The Organizers described the symposium as a vital platform for professional exchange, enabling school leaders to share experiences, build networks, and deepen collaboration across the country’s education landscape.

As Liberia continues efforts to reform and revitalize its education sector, stakeholders emphasized that strong, accountable leadership at the school level remains indispensable to improving teaching quality and delivering better learning outcomes for every child.

The anniversary celebration and symposium come amid intensified calls for systemic reform, with a particular focus on leadership development as a cornerstone of sustainable progress.
