Liberia Secures $12.8 million from Kuwait Fund to Advance Salayea‑Konia Road

By Rufus Divine Brooks Jr

The government of Liberia and KFAED have signed a US$12.8 million financing agreement to fund the next phase of the Salayea‑Konia Road Project.

The road, which spans 50 km (31 miles) between Salayea and Konia, is a key segment of Liberia’s national highway network, linking agricultural hubs.

The new financing is part of a broader mobilisation effort led by KFAED, which is coordinating a consortium of Arab development lenders that includes the Saudi Fund for Development, the OPEC Fund for International Development and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA).

Together, the consortium is working to secure the estimated $77 million required to bring the entire 50‑km stretch to completion.

“We applaud the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development for its steadfast partnership and for providing this vital injection of resources,” said Roland Layfette Giddings, Liberia’s Minister of Public Works, during the signing.

“The government remains fully committed to working with our development partners to ensure that every dollar is used efficiently to deliver a road that will transform the lives of Liberians in the western region.”

Minister Giddings added that the road is expected to cut travel time between Salayea and Konia by more than half, reduce vehicle operating costs, and open new market opportunities for smallholder farmers who currently face high transport costs to reach export points.

Representing the Kuwait Fund, Dafis Divis, head of the delegation, echoed the sentiment of continued support for Liberia’s infrastructure agenda.

“KFAED is honoured to stand alongside Liberia in this endeavour. Our consortium’s collective expertise and financial backing will help not only to finish this corridor but also to lay the groundwork for future projects that connect rural communities to the national economy,” Divis said.

“We look forward to implementing the Salayea‑Konia Road together, hand in hand, and to seeing the positive impact on the people who call this region home.”
