Liberia Secures Leadership Roles on Key U.N. Sanctions Committees

By Rufus Divine Brooks Jr

Liberia has achieved a historic diplomatic milestone under President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, with Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti steering the nation to the forefront of global sanctions diplomacy.

For the first time, Liberia has been nominated to chair and co-chair three major United Nations Sanctions Committees, on Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Yemen, signaling the country’s rise as a trusted voice in international peace and security.

Once approved by the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council (U.S., U.K., France, Russia, and China), Liberia will help guide deliberations, shape sanctions policy, and facilitate international consensus on some of the world’s most complex crises.

The nominations mark a profound turnaround for Liberia, once under U.N. sanctions itself, to now serving as an architect of global accountability.

Minister Nyanti’s leadership and diplomatic acumen, rooted in her extensive U.N. experience, have been central to this achievement.

Her strategic approach has repositioned Liberia as a credible, responsible, and proactive player in global governance, advancing President Boakai’s vision of restoring the nation’s global stature.

“Liberia is no longer just part of the conversation, it’s helping to lead it,” Nyanti affirmed.
