Liberia Selected to Host ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development Centre

Monrovia – Liberia has emerged as the chosen host of the ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development Centre (EYSDC), following a competitive selection process conducted by the ECOWAS Commission. The announcement marks a major diplomatic win for the country and signals its growing influence in regional affairs.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Liberia’s successful bid to host the prestigious regional institution, one of several being relocated due to the recent withdrawal of some ECOWAS member states. The bid was part of a broader strategy by the Liberian government to position the country as a hub for regional cooperation and integration.

Liberia’s Foreign Minister, H.E. Sara Beysolow Nyanti, described the moment as “historic” and expressed gratitude to ECOWAS member states for the confidence placed in Liberia. “We are honored to host the EYSDC and pledge our unwavering commitment to regional integration and youth empowerment,” Minister Nyanti stated.

She praised President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. for his leadership and personal involvement, which she credited as key to the success of Liberia’s bid. The Minister also acknowledged the vital contributions of several government officials and institutions who played pivotal roles in the process.

Among those recognized were Dr. Ibrahim Nyei, Deputy Minister for International Cooperation and Economic Integration, for his strategic oversight; Youth and Sports Minister Cllr. Cole Bangalu, for strengthening the technical framework of Liberia’s proposal; and Economic Advisor to the President, Mr. Morley Kamara, whose guidance aligned the bid with the country’s economic diplomacy priorities.

The General Services Agency (GSA) was commended for its logistical coordination and support, and Senator Edwin Snowe was lauded for his persistent advocacy for Liberia to host a regional institution.

Liberia had originally expressed interest in three out of four ECOWAS institutions vacated due to recent political changes within the bloc, including the West Africa Health Organization (WAHO), the Water Resources Coordination Centre (WRCC), and the EYSDC. While Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau were selected to host WAHO, WRCC, and the Regional Animal Health Centre (RAHC) respectively, Liberia’s hosting of the EYSDC marks a significant diplomatic achievement.

This milestone not only raises Liberia’s profile in the West African subregion but is also expected to bring long-term benefits including youth empowerment, job creation, and greater regional visibility in the areas of education and sports diplomacy.

The government has pledged to ensure a smooth and timely relocation of the Centre to Monrovia and is calling on development partners and stakeholders to support the implementation phase. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to continue pursuing opportunities that promote Liberia’s development and elevate its standing on the regional stage.
