The 55th House of Representatives has approved the addition of 14 new legislative seats, expanding Liberia’s total electoral districts from 73 to 87, following recommendations from its Committees on Elections & Inauguration and Judiciary.
The decision is based on the findings of the 2022 National Population and Housing Census, which showed significant population shifts across the country.
Lawmakers say the expansion is intended to improve proportional representation and ensure that rapidly growing counties receive appropriate legislative coverage.
According to the approved report, Montserrado County Liberia’s most populous will receive four new seats, the highest allocation among all counties. Nimba and Bong counties will each gain two seats, reflecting their population increases.
Several other counties will receive one new seat each. The full breakdown of the additional 14 districts is as follows:
Montserrado County: 4 seats
Nimba County: 2 seats
Bong County: 2 seats
Lofa County: 2 seats
Grand Bassa County: 1 seat
Grand Cape Mount County: 1 seat
Grand Gedeh County: 1 seat
Margibi County: 1 seat
The House’s decision now awaits concurrence from the Liberian Senate before the new seat distribution becomes law.
