Liberian Citizen Dismisses Opposition Claim of Hardship Amid July 17 Protest

Josiah Morris, a Liberian citizen, has pushed back against opposition claims that the country is facing severe economic hardship, calling the narrative politically motivated.

Speaking to our reporter up capitol hill ahead of the highly anticipated July 17 protest organized by former CDC Chairman Mulbah Morlu, Morris argued that conditions in Liberia are not as dire as portrayed by the opposition.

“The protest is more about politics than the real situation on the ground,” Morris said. “Rice prices have actually dropped ~ from $3,500 to $3,100. You call that hardship?”

The protest, organized under the banner Enough is Enough is been formulated by a newly formed civil society group called Solidarity Of Trust For A New Day (STAND), which is spearheaded by Mr. Morlu, who resigned from the former ruling Congress for Democratic Change (CDC).

Morlu has accused the current government of several serious issues, including widespread hardship, disrespect for the rule of law, police brutality, and the unlawful dismissal of tenure-protected officials.

However, Morris believes these claims are being exaggerated to serve political interests.

“Morlu and his people had the opportunity to lead, and they didn’t do much for our people,” Morris added. “Now they want to protest?”

The July 17 protest has gained significant attention and is expected to draw large crowds, with supporters and critics closely watching how it unfolds.

As of press time, not much numbers have been pulled up for the protest leaving everyone in limbo.
