The Liberian Embassy in Ghana has formally withdrawn from the leadership process of the Liberian community in Ghana, just two weeks after a damning investigative report by Verity News alleged interference and manipulation in the community electoral process.
The report, published on July 23, 2025, detailed claims of electoral irregularities and pointed to alleged involvement by the Embassy in favoring certain candidates ~ a revelation that sparked outrage among segments of the Liberian diaspora in Ghana.
In a press release issued Thursday, August 7, the Embassy announced its formal withdrawal from further involvement in the ongoing leadership process of the community, citing persistent internal disputes and what it described as a breakdown in trust.
“This decision follows sustained but unsuccessful efforts to support the establishment of a transparent, credible, and inclusive process,” the Embassy stated.
Despite what it called “broad-based consultations and repeated efforts to build consensus,” the Embassy lamented that the process had been “consistently undermined by internal disagreements and persistent mischaracterizations” of its role.
The Embassy also rejected accusations of interference, asserting that it had “acted solely as a neutral facilitator” throughout. However, it noted that “unfounded allegations have now escalated into overt acts of disrespect,” including public attacks on the institution’s credibility.
“It has become evident that any attempt by the Embassy to continue to facilitate engagement within the community will continue to be met with hostility and public disparagement,” the statement concluded.
The Embassy’s decision to disengage marks a significant development in the ongoing leadership crisis within the Liberian community in Ghana and follows increasing scrutiny sparked by Verity News’ investigation.
The broader implications for the Liberian diaspora’s self-governance remain uncertain, as community leaders and stakeholders now face the challenge of restoring trust and legitimacy to the process without the Embassy’s involvement.
