Liberian Senate Goes on Break

By Archie Boan

The Liberian Senate has officially entered its first legislative recess of the Third Session of the 55th National Legislature, but lawmakers say they remain on high alert and prepared to reconvene.

In a closing remark issued Tuesday by senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence President Pro Tempore of the Liberian Senate, the Senate emphasized that the break, though within its legislative calendar, does not suspend its constitutional duty to respond to pressing issues affecting the country.

Top among those concerns is the evolving situation along the Liberia–Guinea border. The Senate described the development as serious, warning that unresolved tensions could threaten both Liberia’s territorial integrity and the safety of citizens living in border communities.

Despite the recess, the Senate reaffirmed its full backing of the Executive Branch’s diplomatic efforts to engage Guinean authorities, stressing Liberia’s commitment to peaceful dialogue and regional cooperation.

Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence acknowledged the importance of collaboration between branches of government, extending appreciation to Joseph Nyumah Boakai for his recent engagement with the Senate.

The interaction, she noted, reflects a unified national approach during a period of uncertainty.

Beyond security concerns, the Pro-Tempore raised alarm over mounting economic pressures driven by global developments, particularly the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. As a country heavily dependent on imports, Liberia is increasingly vulnerable to fluctuations in fuel and food prices factors already impacting the cost of living.

To maintain oversight during the recess, the Senate has directed key committees including Defense, Ways and Means, and Internal Affairs to remain active. These committees are expected to monitor the border situation, assess economic trends, and coordinate closely with the Executive Branch.

In a clear signal of urgency, senators have been instructed to remain within reach and ready to return to session immediately if circumstances demand. The Senate leadership stressed that any emergency recall would be carried out without placing additional financial strain on the government.

Citizens, particularly those in border regions, have been urged to remain calm and rely on verified information from official sources as authorities work to preserve peace and stability.
