Liberian Theologian Dr. Emmanuel Y. Tarley Announces Forthcoming Book on National Reconciliation

By: Archie Boan

Liberian theologian and scholar, Dr. Emmanuel Y. Tarley Sr., has disclosed that his new book examining Liberia’s longstanding challenges with national reconciliation is nearing publication.

The work is titled, “The Dilemma of Genuine Reconciliation in Liberia: A Comparative Analysis of the Rwanda Genocide and Adoption of Rwanda’s Mechanisms for Liberia’s Reconciliation and Healing Journey.”
Speaking to the press, Dr. Tarley explained that the book presents an in-depth analysis of Liberia’s reconciliation efforts over the years, noting that the country has struggled to achieve genuine healing largely due to political interests and sentiments overriding the national good.

He argues that Liberia has yet to establish a unified pathway toward meaningful reconciliation despite years of initiatives following the civil conflict.

The theologian said the book draws important lessons from Rwanda’s post-genocide recovery, particularly the systems and mechanisms that helped rebuild trust, accountability, and national cohesion in the aftermath of one of the most tragic events in African history.

He believes Liberia can adopt similar structures to strengthen its own reconciliation and healing process.
Dr. Tarley further revealed that the manuscript is now at the publishing stage, following what he described as a rigorous editing and review process.

He acknowledged the contributions of several respected Liberian educators and professionals, including diplomat and academic Dr. Williams Towah, who provided critical editorial oversight.

He emphasized the need for the book to be made widely accessible, particularly in academic settings, stressing that young people must be engaged in understanding Liberia’s historical challenges and the need for collective healing.

Dr. Tarley expressed confidence that the book, once published, will contribute meaningfully to national discourse on reconciliation, justice, and sustainable peace in Liberia.
