Kinjor, Grand Cape Mount – A fatal incident in Kinjor at the Tailings Storage Facility in the operational area of Bea Mountain Mining Corporation has raised fresh concerns about safety and dignity of labor. A Liberian miner, Philip Garvelo Blawin, who was a driver for Bea Mountain, lost his life when a Komatsu HD785 Truck struck a parked Volvo Articulated Truck, rolling over the victim. The impact instantly killed Philp Blawin.
Despite the severity of the incident, Bea Mountain Mining Corporation (BMMC) has yet to issue a statement, leaving employees frustrated and concerned about the recurring dangers at the mine due to limited or no safety measures. Workers have expressed dismay over the company’s handling of safety issues, pointing to a pattern of fatal workplace accidents in recent months.
In a video widely shared among employees, a worker voiced frustration over the lack of safety measures. He described the accident as part of an ongoing trend of workplace fatalities which signify continued labor abuse at the company, recalling previous incidents where colleagues were crushed by heavy equipment. “We need serious action from the safety department to prevent tragedies like this,” he said. “We cannot continue losing lives because of preventable accidents. Safety has to be taken seriously.”
As seen in the leaked pictures and video, victim Blawin had no safety gears and there was no reflector seen at the time of the midnight incident. The incident has reignited demands for urgent safety reforms at the mining site. Employees are calling on Bea Mountain to implement stricter protocols to minimize risks and ensure that workers are better protected. With no official response from the company, uncertainty lingers, and the victim’s family, along with coworkers, are left searching for accountability.
Verity News further invevstigated and gathered details on the victim whose corpse now lies in the mortuary of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Sinkor, Monrovia. A family member told Verity News that the deceased, Philip Garvelo Blawin was a citizen of Larkpazee Town, Monweh District #1 in River Cess County.
There are credible reports that the company has been engaged with the deceased’s family and the Liberian National Police since last night to allegedly cover up this tragic and negligible incident. It can be recalled that in June 2024, Verity News uncovered another fatal incident where mining equipment amputated a Liberian worker’s hand due to inadequate safety measures
