A Liberian worker, Gibson Karteh, who was a third-party contractor of Arcelor Mittal lost his life when a vessel’s crane malfunctioned while in use at the Buchanan Port, causing multiple cables to unexpectedly recoil towards the crane cabin.
The iron ore company has confirmed Karteh’s passing in an official statement. According to initial findings, Karteh sustained serious injuries and later died when the malfunctioned crane’s cables struck him.
Arcelor Mittal claimed that an emergency team responded at the scene and provided medical assistance.
“The affected area has since been secured, and all operations related to the incident have been suspended as a full investigation is carried out. Our thoughts are with the operator’s family and loved ones at this difficult time,” a press statement released by AML said.
Multiple workers, including employees and third-party contractors, have consistently accused Arcelor Mittal of bad labor practices including poor safety measures and unsafe working environments.
A worker said to Verity News, “This is Arcelor Mittal negligence. It’s been happening. They have a lot of old equipment and machines; and they know it but still use them.”
