Scores of Liberians, including anti-rape campaigners and justice advocates, are gathering in Monrovia to protest what they describe as a troubling rise in rape and sodomy cases across the country.
The demonstrators marched through key streets of the capital, calling for justice, stronger protection for victims, and greater accountability for perpetrators.
“We are assembling to send a strong message that we need justice and accountability for all rape and sodomy victims,” said one protester, speaking to Verity News. “Our children are being abused by predators. This thing is becoming rampant in Liberia. We have to stop it now.”
Organizers of the protest emphasized that their action is aimed at pressuring government authorities to take more decisive measures against sexual violence. They called for the prosecution of offenders and the implementation of policies that ensure the safety of vulnerable groups, particularly women and children.
The protest also drew support from prominent Liberian artists, including Kpanto, who used their platform to raise awareness about the issue.
Speakers highlighted that without urgent intervention, the rising cases of sexual violence could severely threaten the wellbeing of communities nationwide.
Advocates warned that systemic inaction could embolden perpetrators and exacerbate the trauma experienced by survivors. Many protesters carried placards demanding stricter laws and the enforcement of existing protections for victims.
The demonstration comes amid growing public concern about sexual violence in Liberia, with activists urging both the government and law enforcement agencies to prioritize prevention, accountability, and support services for survivors.
Authorities have yet to issue an official response to the protest, but organizers remain committed to maintaining pressure until substantive action is taken.
