Monrovia — The Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) Fitzgerald Biago has raised alarm that Liberia is increasingly being used as a transit point for illicit drugs moving across the West African sub-region.
According to the LDEA OIC, Mr Biago, Liberia does not produce many of the hard drugs being intercepted by authorities, indicating that the substances are being transported through the country rather than manufactured locally. “We don’t have some of these areas in Liberia where people produce these drugs, so they are transported through Liberia,” he disclosed.
Mr Fitzgerald Biago further linked the growing drug trafficking activities to regional border challenges, noting that with the current border closures, trafficking routes from neighboring Sierra Leone have reportedly increased.
He warned that Liberia’s strategic location and porous borders continue to make the country vulnerable to drug trafficking networks, stressing the need for stronger border security, regional cooperation, and enhanced law enforcement response to curb the menace.
The disclosure has renewed public concern over Liberia’s role in regional drug trafficking and its potential impact on national security and youth development.
