Tension is mounting within the Liberty Party following a dispute over the suspension of the Executive Committee of the party’s National Youth Congress and the delayed release of an investigative report into the matter.
The entire leadership of the Liberty Party National Youth Congress was previously suspended by the party’s political leadership over actions described as disrespectful toward members of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
The suspension reportedly followed a communication from youth leaders to senior party executives requesting employment opportunities.
In response to the allegations, the party constituted an investigative committee to examine the matter.
According to officials of the Youth Congress, the committee concluded its work approximately two months ago and submitted its findings, but the outcome has not yet been formally communicated to those affected.
In a letter dated February 18, 2026, addressed to Ruggie Y. Barry, Chairperson of the Liberty Party, the Youth Congress leadership requested the release of the investigative report and a formal decision from the NEC.
“Warm compliments from the Liberty Party National Youth Congress,” the letter begins, before outlining the concerns of the suspended officials.
“As you are aware, the entire Executive Committee was suspended to allow for a comprehensive review of the allegations brought against its members. Throughout this period, the affected members have remained patient, cooperative, and fully respectful of the Party’s established processes, thereby reaffirming their commitment to party discipline and unity.”
The letter further states that the investigative process has already been completed.
“The members duly appeared before the investigative body, and the investigation was concluded approximately sixty (60) days ago. We have also been reliably informed that the committee has finalized its report. However, the findings and recommendations have not yet been formally communicated to the concerned parties.”
The Youth Congress leadership argued that releasing the report would help reinforce transparency and confidence within the party.
“In keeping with the Party’s cherished principles of transparency, fairness, and due process, we respectfully request that the investigative committee’s report be released at the earliest convenience.”
The communication was signed by Edward Bloconjay Settro, Secretary General of the Youth Congress, and approved by its chairman, Othello Y. Garpue. Copies were also sent to members of the party’s National Executive Committee, the party’s National Secretary General, and the chair of the investigative committee.
Sources within the Youth Congress claim the investigative panel recommended reinstating the suspended officials. However, the party’s leadership has yet to publicly confirm the report’s conclusions or announce a final decision.
Efforts to obtain an official response from the leadership of the Liberty Party were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
Political observers say the situation reflects ongoing internal tensions within opposition political parties in Liberia, particularly regarding youth participation, internal governance, and transparency in disciplinary processes.
For the suspended youth leaders, however, the matter remains unresolved. They say the release of the investigative report and the NEC’s decision is necessary to restore clarity and confidence within the party’s structures.
