Shanghai, China – The Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) and the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in maritime education, technical capacity development, and institutional governance.
The agreement establishes a framework for strategic partnership and collaboration in training maritime professionals, exchange of knowledge, and the promotion of high standards within Liberia’s maritime sector. Through this partnership, both institutions will work closely to design and implement programs that enhance maritime safety, security, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance.
A central focus of the MoU is the development of scholarship and educational opportunities for young and talented Liberian students, enabling them to pursue higher-level training, academic degrees, and specialized technical programs at Shanghai Maritime University. This initiative is expected to support the growth of a new generation of maritime leaders prepared to contribute to national development and global maritime governance.
Additionally, the cooperation will encompass: Technical assistance and institutional support to strengthen maritime governance in Liberia, Exchange of faculty, experts, and best practices between SMU and Liberia Maritime Training Institute (LMTI)
The MoU aligns with Liberia’s strategic goals to expand its human resource base, modernize its maritime institutions, and reinforce its position as a leading global maritime nation.
