The Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA) has formally endorsed the nomination of His Honor Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay as Chief Justice of the Honorable Supreme Court of Liberia, following his appointment by President Joseph Nyumah Boakai.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the LNBA, under the leadership of its National President Cllr. Bornor M. Varmah, described the nomination as “appropriate, expedient, and legally prudent,” calling it a pivotal moment for the continued strengthening of Liberia’s judiciary.
Justice Gbeisay, a seasoned jurist with decades of experience in Liberia’s legal system, is currently serving as an Associate Justice on the nation’s highest court. His nomination comes as current Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene Yuoh nears the mandatory retirement age of 70.
The Bar commended President Boakai for what it termed a wise and thoughtful choice, noting that Justice Gbeisay’s elevation reflects both institutional continuity and an enduring commitment to legal excellence.
“Justice Gbeisay’s professional journey is emblematic of dedication and service to the rule of law,” the LNBA stated. “From his years as a practicing attorney, through his time as Relieving Judge, and now as an Associate Justice, he brings unmatched depth and judicial temperament to the bench.”
The LNBA urged the Liberian Senate to confirm the nomination promptly to ensure the uninterrupted operations of the Supreme Court and broader judicial system.
The statement, signed by LNBA Secretary General Cllr. Elisha T.J. Forkeyoh, Sr., also extended best wishes to Justice Gbeisay as he prepares to assume leadership of the judiciary.
“We remain confident that under his stewardship, the judiciary will continue to uphold justice, constitutionalism, and the rights of all Liberians,” the Bar concluded.
If confirmed by the Senate, Justice Gbeisay will become the fourth person to serve as Chief Justice since the end of the Liberian civil conflict in 2003, following Chief Justices Johnnie Lewis, Francis S. Korkpor, and Sie-A-Nyene Yuoh.
