LNP Bong Detachment Imposes Nighttime Curfew on Motorcyclists Amid Rise in Armed Robbery

GBARNGA, BONG COUNTY – In response to a recent surge in armed robbery cases, the Bong County Detachment of the Liberia National Police (LNP) has imposed a nighttime curfew on commercial motorcyclists operating in the county’s capital, Gbarnga.

The new restriction, which takes effect beginning Wednesday, September 10, 2025, prohibits all motorcycle traffic between the hours of 11:30 PM and 5:00 AM daily. The measure was announced by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and Bong County Commander Fasu Sheriff following a joint security meeting on Tuesday. While this measure is strictly for commercial motorcyclists, those riding private bikes during late-night hours will be required to provide identification cards or relevant documents.

ACP Sheriff said the decision to impose the curfew comes amid growing public concern over a wave of violent criminal activity in the area. He emphasized that motorcyclists may have increasingly been linked—either directly or indirectly, knowingly or unknowingly- to transport perpetrators of the crimes.

The curfew follows three high-profile armed robbery incidents within the span of just two months, notably in the Phebe Community, Jomah’s Business Center, and most recently at the residence of a well-known money exchanger in the Sugar Hill Community, which was targeted last Saturday.

According to Sheriff, the decision to enforce the curfew was reached in close consultation with County Attorney Jonathan Flomo and the county’s local leadership, including Bong County Superintendent Loleyah Norris.

A high-level security meeting convened by Superintendent Norris earlier today brought together local law enforcement officials, community leaders, and representatives from the motorcycle union to discuss collaborative approaches to combating crime. The nighttime curfew emerged as one of the immediate interventions to address the security concerns.

Authorities say the curfew will remain in place until further notice, and have vowed to rigorously enforce the restriction. Violators, particularly commercial motorcyclists caught operating during the curfew hours, may face penalties, including fines or possible arrest.

The police have called on the general public, especially motorcyclists, to remain law-abiding and to report any suspicious activity in their communities.
