LNP Launches Investigation into Alleged Gang Rape of Elderly Woman in Ganta

By Jeremiah Gayflor

Ganta, Nimba County ~ The Liberia National Police (LNP) has launched a full-scale investigation into an alleged gang rape incident involving a 60-year-old woman in Ganta, Nimba County.

According to a police report, one suspect has already been arrested and formally charged in connection with the assault, while a second suspect remains on the run. A manhunt is currently underway to apprehend the fugitive.

Preliminary findings from the investigation have revealed that the second suspect is the son of a serving LNP officer. That officer is now under investigation by the LNP’s Professional Standards Department for allegedly attempting to obstruct the arrest of his son.

In an official statement, the Liberia National Police emphasized its commitment to impartiality and justice, stating: “The LNP assures the public that this investigation will be handled with complete impartiality.”

The police further condemned all forms of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), reaffirming their dedication to protecting vulnerable populations and holding all individuals accountable, regardless of status or affiliation.

“This matter is being pursued with urgency, professionalism, and sensitivity to the victim and her family,” the statement read. “No one is above the law—not even members of our own institution.”

The LNP is calling on the public to cooperate with investigators and to continue reporting cases of SGBV through reliable community channels. They have also pledged to provide timely updates as the investigation unfolds, in line with the department’s principles of transparency, accountability, and public trust.

The identity of the victim is being withheld to protect her privacy.
