LNP Releases Samuel Jackson After 48-Hour Detention

Monrovia, Liberia — The Liberia National Police (LNP) has released Samuel Jackson, the 73-year-old Liberian economist and political analyst, to his legal representatives following the expiration of the legally mandated 48-hour detention period.

Police sources confirmed that the release, which occurred on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, was carried out in strict compliance with Liberian law, which requires that suspects either be formally charged or released within 48 hours of detention. Authorities have not clarified whether Jackson will face formal charges in connection with the ongoing investigation into the death of his South African wife, Toni Khumalo Jackson.

Jackson had been named a suspect following preliminary forensic investigations at his Monrovia residence on Old Road. Earlier reports from police spokesman Sam Collins indicated that investigators observed bruises and lacerations on Toni Jackson’s body, prompting the elevation of Jackson from a person of interest to a formal suspect. The investigation attracted widespread public attention after Jackson himself shared a distressing Facebook Live video announcing his wife’s critical condition and later confirming her death.

The case has sparked nationwide discussions around domestic safety and accountability. Liberian rapper Queen V, whose father was allegedly killed in 1985, publicly commented on the case, linking Jackson’s Facebook Live confession to a broader conversation about justice and transparency. She shared images of her late father, emphasizing the importance of holding individuals accountable in high-profile cases.

Adding further weight to the discourse, Rufus S. Berry II, a longtime friend of Jackson, released a detailed statement recounting previous incidents of abuse against Toni Jackson. Berry, who had met Jackson through the online forum Coalition of Concerned Liberians, said he confronted Jackson about the abuse on multiple occasions and witnessed bruises on Toni during trips between Liberia and the United States.

Berry expressed that Jackson’s “demonstrated pattern of brutal violence” made him capable of causing fatal harm, stressing that Toni Jackson deserved justice. He also confirmed he had contacted Police Commissioner Gregory Coleman to offer formal testimony.

As the investigation continues, authorities have not yet released the official cause of Toni Jackson’s death but the Liberia National Police has former suspect Jackson not to leave the country. The public remains closely attentive to developments, calling for thorough legal scrutiny, social accountability, and clarity from law enforcement.
