The Liberia National Police (LNP) has called for calm, lawful conduct and public consideration ahead of a planned protest by the civic group STAND scheduled for December 17.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the LNP said it is aware of public announcements concerning the protest and has already engaged STAND’s leadership as part of its routine preventive and dialogue-based approach to public order management.
According to the police, discussions with STAND focused on public safety, crowd management and mobility concerns, particularly given the heightened movement and commercial activity associated with the Christmas festive season. The LNP noted that this period places increased demands on national security and that large public gatherings could pose risks to public safety and the free movement of citizens.
The police said STAND was advised, in good faith, to consider postponing the protest until after the holidays. However, the LNP acknowledged subsequent public communications indicating the group’s intention to proceed with the demonstration as planned.
While reaffirming respect for the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, the LNP emphasized that such rights must be exercised lawfully and responsibly, without endangering public safety or infringing on the rights of others.
The police further reminded the public that the grounds of the Executive Mansion are not designated for protests or demonstrations, and that existing restrictions on motorcycles and tricycles remain in effect. Any violations of the law, the LNP warned, will be addressed promptly and professionally in accordance with Liberian law.
The LNP reiterated its commitment to dialogue, restraint and professionalism, stressing the need to balance constitutional freedoms with the responsibility to maintain national peace and public order.
Citizens, residents and visitors were assured that they can continue their normal activities without fear, as the police remain fully deployed to maintain calm, facilitate free movement and ensure a safe and peaceful festive season.
