Monrovia, Liberia — The Liberty Party (LP), a key member of the Rescue Mission Alliance, boycotted the Unity Party’s (UP) homecoming and fundraising program held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, deepening signs of strain within the ruling coalition.
Despite receiving formal invitations, no LP executive attended the event, a move insiders say was a deliberate decision sanctioned by the party’s top leadership.
According to senior party sources, the LP’s National Executive Committee, National Advisory Council, and National Stakeholders Committee convened late Tuesday at the residence of the party’s Political Leader to review the UP’s invitation. After deliberations, the bodies reportedly agreed that no executive from any of the LP’s three leadership structures should participate in the program.
Growing Tensions Inside the Alliance
Party insiders cite several unresolved issues that have contributed to a deepening rift between the LP and the UP, including:
What the LP describes as the UP’s “constant disregard” for Alliance Chairperson Pro-Tempore Senator Nyonblee Kangar Lawrence in major coalition decisions.
Comments allegedly made by the UP chairman referring to LP and other alliance partners as “helping verbs.”
A reported incident after the UP’s 2023 victory in which the UP chairman allegedly asked LP representatives to leave a meeting room, asserting the win belonged solely to the UP.
“These actions have gone far enough,” one insider said. “UP must understand that we are partners in this alliance and deserve respect.”
Boycott Extends to LP Members in Government
The decision to shun the UP gathering reportedly applied to all LP officials, including those serving in government and lawmakers elected on the party’s ticket. All complied with the directive and were absent from Saturday’s event.
Despite the boycott and ongoing tensions, LP sources insist the party remains committed to supporting President Boakai and the broader goals of the Rescue Mission. However, they stress that moving forward, the Unity Party must acknowledge the Liberty Party’s contributions and treat it as a full and respected partner within the alliance.
The Unity Party has not yet publicly responded to the LP’s absence or the concerns raised by its ally.
