The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) has announced a temporary reduction in price floors for both voice and data services. The move, expected to take effect later this week, comes as part of a broader market adjustment strategy pending the LTA’s completion of an ongoing cost study.
According to a press release issued by the LTA on Monday, October 21, the price floor for voice services will drop from 1.56 cents to 1.30 cents per minute starting October 22. Meanwhile, the price floor for data will be reduced from 2.18 tenths of a cent to 1.53 tenths per megabyte, with the adjustment taking effect on November 22.
The LTA emphasized that the price reduction is intended to safeguard consumer interests while maintaining the competitiveness and sustainability of Liberia’s telecommunications sector.
“The price floors have been largely successful in restoring sector revenues and allowing operators to compete effectively,” the LTA stated, reaffirming that the price floors if respected, would enable service providers to invest in improved network coverage and user experience.
The price floor adjustments will remain in effect until the LTA concludes its ongoing cost study, conducted by international consultants with financing from the World Bank. The findings from this study are expected to help the LTA refine its price floor determination, ensuring a balance between fair pricing and sector sustainability.
The LTA has reassured consumers that these changes will enhance the quality of service as operators continue to expand their network coverage and upgrade their services.
The temporary reduction reflects the regulatory body’s continued commitment to fostering a competitive telecommunications environment that benefits consumers and operators.
