The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) has taken a significant step in combating the rising threat of cybercrimes with the official launch of its nationwide Cybersecurity Awareness Campaign.
The event, held on Friday, November 22, 2024, in Ganta City, Nimba County, marked the beginning of an ambitious initiative to educate citizens about the dangers of online scams, fraud, and other cyber offenses.
The campaign is part of the LTA’s mission to empower Liberians with the knowledge needed to protect themselves in an increasingly digital world. Following the success of the Cybersecurity Conference in October 2024, this campaign aims to reach every corner of Liberia, fostering awareness and resilience against digital threats.
Commissioner Angela Cassell Bush, who spearheaded the launch, emphasized the importance of effectively creating an informed public to counter cybercrimes. “The goal of this campaign is to ensure that every Liberian, regardless of their background, understands the potential dangers lurking online and knows how to protect themselves from cyber scams and fraud,” she stated during the launch.
The one-day event in Ganta featured various activities, including media engagements through local radio stations such as Radio Voice of Gompa (VOG) 106.5, HOTT FM 107.9, and Radio Seletorwah FM 101.1.
Discussions focused on strategies to avoid online scams, identify phishing attempts, and navigate social media safely. A float through Ganta’s streets and door-to-door visits brought the campaign’s message directly to residents. The team distributed educational materials and offered practical advice on staying safe online. Special sessions were held with diverse groups, including market women, motorcyclists, and students, to ensure that vulnerable populations received critical information about online safety.
United Liberia Inland Academy (ULICA), JW Pearson High School, and Christian Foundation High School participated actively, highlighting the campaign’s focus on youth awareness.
The LTA’s Cybersecurity Awareness Campaign will extend to all 15 counties of Liberia in the coming months. Commissioner Bush reaffirmed the LTA’s commitment to reaching citizens from all walks of life. “We are committed to reaching every corner of Liberia with this crucial message,” she said, adding that the campaign will target schools, businesses, government institutions, and ordinary citizens alike.
The campaign team, led by Hon. Angela Cassell Bush and Commissioner Joe Jomah Kerkula, includes a dedicated group of professionals committed to the cause. Notable team members include Sangai P. Moliwulo, Cllr. T. Emmanuel Tomah, and Kpanah Sao, among others.
As Liberia continues to embrace digital transformation, the LTA’s initiative to raise cybersecurity awareness is a timely and necessary response to growing cyber threats. By equipping citizens with the knowledge to protect themselves, the campaign aims to reduce the prevalence of cybercrimes and ensure a safer online environment. The LTA’s efforts are expected to have a lasting impact, fostering a culture of vigilance and security in Liberia’s digital landscape.
