Major Political Blow to the CDC? Over 15 Executive Members and Senior Partisans Resign in Vote-Rich Nimba

Barely a month after CDC Vice Chairman for Operations of the Nimba Chapter, Mr. Prince Yeah, resigned, more than 15 executive members and senior partisans have followed him.

As the Opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) joined STAND in an anti-government protest in Monrovia today, more than a dozen of its party executives and senior members from vote-rich Nimba County tendered their resignation through a joint statement that was publicly issued in Saniquellie.

The 8-count Joint Statement, a copy as attached which is in possession of this paper asserted, “…Following a careful review of our affiliation and membership with the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), and our attending experiences over the years of said party’s administration in Liberia, we are constrained at this point in time to revisit our decision made years back to join the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC)…Now, therefore, in due consideration of the foregoing, we, the like-minded affiliates, members, and executives of the Nimba Chapter of the CDC do hereby publicly proclaim our resignation.”

The executives and senior members who resigned this evening include:

1) Hon. Thomas O. Suah – Regional Secretary (Nimba and Lofa)

2) Hon. Lemuel Karwolo – Vice Chairman for International Affairs

3) Hon. Abraham Zehgeay – Vice Chairman for Gov’t Affairs

4) Hon. Anita Roberts – Vice Chair for Finance

6) Hon. Helena Y. Titus – District #2 Chairlady

7) Hon. Michael Yarkpah – County Chairman (PROMO)

8)Hon. Nathan Beibli – County Chairman (CDC Auxiliary)

10) Hon. Edwin Tour Miaway – District #7 Coordinator (NALCREW)

11) Madam Saybah Kamara – Chairperson, Yekepa

12) Hon. George Gono Tokpa – Senior Member, District #2

13) Hon. H. Wompmen Sandi – Senior Member, District #3

14) Mr. Edwin Kamah – Senior Member, District #3

15) Mr. Alex N. Suah – Executive SG to Ex-Lawmaker, District #3

16) Madam Elkie Gbah – Women Wing Chair (PROMO-Weah)

The former CDC executives and senior partisans from Nimba County have however pledged their full support to the Boakai-Koung Administration according to the Joint Statement. In the first round of the 2023 elections, the CDC obtained 50,427 votes from vote-rich Nimba County, constituting 21.74% while in the 2023 Run-Off Presidential Election, they obtained 50,453 votes constituting 25.86%.

With this new development coming out of Nimba, some pundits and analysts are concluding that this could deal a major political blow to the former ruling party ahead of another election in 2029.
