Majority Bloc Speaker Faces Divorce Suit, Wife Alleges Infidelity, Desertion, and Bigamy

Monrovia, Liberia- The wife of Majority Bloc Speaker, Cecelia Koon, has filed a divorce suit against her husband, Representative Richard Nagbe Koon of District #11, citing incompatibility of temper, adultery, and desertion.

In the complaint filed before Resident Circuit, Civil Law Court Judge J. Kennedy Peabody, Mrs. Koon, a Liberian citizen currently residing in the United States, detailed a series of grievances against her husband, Speaker Koon. According to the complaint, the couple married on July 29, 2015, in Wilmington, Delaware, USA, after Koon allegedly presented a Liberian divorce decree showing that he was no longer married to his previous spouse, Angeline W. Koon. Their marriage, initially harmonious, reportedly deteriorated in 2018 when Koon assumed public office.

She further accused the “Majority Bloc” Speaker of abandoning their marital home, thereby engaging in extramarital affairs, and fathering a child with another woman, Gifty Faikai. She also names Christiana Belloh Tue, a U.S. resident, as another party involved in an alleged affair, further claiming that Tue attempted to sponsor Koon for U.S. citizenship, falsely claiming to be his wife. The complaint goes on to allege that Rep. Koon failed to support his wife financially and denied her access to duplex properties in Maryland, which he allegedly gifted her in a notarized reward letter.“

This marriage has become a threat to my physical and mental well-being,” the plaintiff stated in her plea to the court. She asked for the immediate annulment of their marriage, citing the danger of remaining in a union she describes as emotionally abusive and legally compromised by possible bigamy. The court has issued a Writ of Summons, ordering Rep. Koon to respond to the petition by May 1, 2025, and to appear before the court on June 16, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. Failure to comply may result in a default judgment against him.

This case adds a legal twist to the public life of Rep. Koon, whose leadership in the House has already faced political scrutiny. As the legal proceedings unfold, the outcome may have both personal and political ramifications for the Montserrado County lawmaker.Meanwhile, Koon is yet to response to this latest suit brought forth by his wife residing in the U.S.
