The Liberia National Police (LNP) has launched an active investigation into a man accused of impersonating a police officer — a crime he was previously arrested for in 2023.
The suspect, whose real identity remains under scrutiny, was involved in a hit-and-run incident on the night of Sunday, August 17, near the Vamoma checkpoint. He was rushed to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center for treatment. It was there that hospital staff and officers discovered he was wearing a full LNP uniform and in possession of a fake police identification card bearing the name “Melvin D. Swen,” with the rank of Inspector.
During preliminary questioning, the suspect identified himself as Melvin D. Swen and claimed to reside in Matadi Estate. However, further investigation revealed potential links to a different identity: Cornelius D. Neville, reportedly of Cow Factory, Jamaica Road. Police are now working to confirm his true biological identity.
Authorities have confirmed that the individual was previously arrested in 2023 for the same offense, classifying him as a recidivist ~ someone who persistently engages in unlawful behavior despite prior arrests.
The suspect remains hospitalized under police supervision and is expected to face formal charges once he recovers.
The LNP has issued a warning to the public, emphasizing that impersonating a law enforcement officer is a serious criminal offense. Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
