Man Detained for Impersonating AFL Officer; LIS Officer Robbed and Injured

By Jeremiah B. Gayflor, II

Ganta City, Nimba County ~ A man believed to be in his early 40s has been detained by the Liberia National Police (LNP) in Ganta City, Nimba County for allegedly impersonating an officer of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL).

The suspect, identified as Rannie Siaway, was arrested over the weekend at the headquarters of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) in Ganta. His arrest came after he reportedly presented himself as a member of the AFL in an attempt to secure the release of an alleged suspect who was in the custody of the LDEA.

According to Command Sergeant Major Gee Sherto, Commander of the Armed Forces of Liberia in Nimba County, Siaway approached officers and presented himself as AFL personnel. However, upon further questioning, he failed to respond accurately to basic military-related inquiries, raising suspicions and prompting his arrest.

In an interview with Variety, Siaway admitted to impersonating an AFL officer. He claimed his actions were driven by a long-standing passion to join the military. He has since appealed to CSM Sherto and the AFL for forgiveness.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, an officer of the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) has reportedly fallen victim to an alleged robbery.

Officer Phillip Graceful, who serves as the Chief of Operations for the LIS in Ganta, was attacked while traveling from Sanniquellie to Ganta around 10:00 PM on his private motorbike. Reports indicate that the suspect, identified as Wonselea Wehyee, allegedly pushed Officer Graceful off the bike, leaving him with serious injuries, before fleeing the scene with the motorbike.

Police in Ganta have arrested and charged Wonselea Wehyee, who has since been forwarded to court. He has admitted to the act and is reportedly seeking forgiveness from Officer Graceful.

Both matters remain under investigation as authorities in Nimba County call for increased vigilance and public cooperation in maintaining security in the region.
