Margibi County Senator, Nathaniel McGill has intensified calls for greater accountability in the ongoing Medtech vehicle purchase scandal, directly targeting Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) Commissioner General Dorbor Jallah.
McGill alleges that Jallah violated the law by authorizing Medtech to proceed with an illegal transaction, despite clear warnings from the Senate.
This follows the recent resignation of Commerce Minister Amin Modad, who was also implicated in the controversy.
In a strongly worded post on his official Facebook page, Senator McGill welcomed Modad’s resignation but insisted that it is “a necessary first step” that remains inadequate.
He pointed out that the larger issue lies with the LRA’s authorization of Medtech’s actions, which he says constitutes a blatant violation of legal protocols. According to McGill, the Senate’s own investigation into the matter uncovered this violation, labeling it a breach of the government’s agreement with Medtech.
The Senate recommended a full audit by the General Auditing Commission (GAC) to determine how much Medtech had spent on behalf of the government and insisted that Medtech be held accountable for any financial discrepancies.“
The Liberia Revenue Authority clearly violated the law by instructing Medtech to purchase the vehicle,” McGill wrote.
“While Amin personally benefited from this transaction, it was the LRA that broke the law, making both parties equally guilty and liable.
This situation is not just about Amin’s resignation; this is about transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.”McGill emphasized that transparency must be at the core of resolving the scandal.
He warned that if this situation is not thoroughly addressed, it would set a dangerous precedent for future violations, eroding public trust in Liberia’s institutions.
“Failure to enforce these principles will allow such violations to continue unchecked, undermining the integrity of our public institutions,” McGill added.
The Medtech transaction, which reportedly involved the illegal purchase of a government vehicle, has sparked widespread outrage.
Public sentiment has grown more critical, with calls for further investigations into not only Modad’s role but also the actions of other high-level officials involved in the process.
Senator McGill’s demand for a GAC audit aligns with broader public calls for justice and transparency.
The audit, if conducted, will delve into the exact financial losses incurred and whether Medtech should be responsible for repayment.
The investigation may also widen to scrutinize other transactions authorized by the LRA under similar circumstances.
