Margibi, Maryland, Lofa, and Grand Gedeh Advance to Semi-Finals in County Sports Meet

The Samuel Kanyan Doe (SKD) Sports Stadium came alive with remarkable sportsmanship on Saturday and Sunday as the National County Sports Meet quarterfinals climaxed.

Maryland County secured a hard-fought victory over Gbarpolu County in football after a 1-1 draw, winning through penalties. Meanwhile, Lofa County delivered a stunning 4-0 triumph over Bong County in the football category, cementing their dominance.

However, Lofa County fell short in the kickball category, losing 4-1 to Grand Bassa County’s girls. On the other hand, Bong County’s kickball team claimed an emphatic 7-2 victory over Gbarpolu County’s girls.

The excitement continued on Sunday as Margibi and Grand Gedeh advanced to the football semi-finals with penalty shootout victories. Grand Gedeh edged out Cape Mount after a 2-2 draw, while Margibi defeated Nimba County in a nail-biting penalty shootout following a goalless 90 minutes.

Grand Gedeh, Bong, Grand Bassa, and Lofa Counties’ girls advanced to the semi-finals in the kickball category. After a new draw is conducted, these teams will soon face off to determine who will reach the grand finals.

For football, Maryland, Grand Gedeh, Margibi, and Lofa will also await a draw to finalize their semi-final matchups.

The National County Sports Meet has been Liberia’s foremost traditional and prestigious competition since its inception. Designed to unite Liberians from diverse ethnic backgrounds, it serves as a beacon of national pride.

This year’s tournament began enthusiastically, kicked off by President Joseph Boakai in Grand Cape Mount County. Each county rallies support based on tribal and regional pride, creating an electrifying atmosphere of unity and sportsmanship.

The competition includes various games such as football, kickball, basketball, and more, showcasing Liberia’s athletic talent and cultural diversity.
