MCSS Superintendent, Dr. Augurie E. Stevens, along with the Representative of electoral District #7, Hon. Emmanuel Dahn, including officials of the township of West Point, has broken ground to elevate N.V. Massaquoi Elementary and Junior High School to Senior High.
“We are here to give this project a million percent support. As a custodian of MCSS, I want to thank all of you, including the Commissioner. It is because of our students that we do what we do because we want the best out of them. I want our children to be educated. I want quality and affordable education for all”. Dr. Stevens said
The MCSS Superintendent stressed that when she received a text from the school’s principal, Mr. Nowomu D. Sondah, that the school was about to be refurbished and elevated to a senior high level, though impressed, but was stunned, thinking where the money would come from as there is absolutely no money in the MCSS budget for said project. She thanked the government, especially President Boakai, Representative Emmanuel Dahn, officials of the township of Westpoint and the Monrovia Metropolitan Climate Resilience Project (MMCRP) for the initiative. At the same time, Dr. Stevens said the school system under her administration was able to renovate 4 MCSS schools, adding that additional 3 schools are expected to be renovated this school year based on available resources.
Remarking at the occasion, the project’s technical focal person, Mr. Archie C. Gbassay, noted that the Monrovia Metropolitan Climate Resilience Project (MMCRP), also known as the Coastal Defense Project, is a major initiative designed to protect the Liberian capital from, sea-level rise and coastal erosion, stating that the project focuses on the vulnerable West Point township, which has lost 30 meters of shoreline and over 600 homes in the past decades. He emphasized that the school project is part of the Monrovia Metropolitan Climate Resilience Project that, when completed in the period of 8 months, will benefit the school-going kids of the township of Westpoint.
Speaking at the occasion, the Representative of the District, Hon. Emmanuel Dahn called on residents of the township to depoliticize the construction of the project and prioritise unity over division in order to achieve their goal for the common good of the township.
