The case against Chinese investor Michael Shio has taken a dramatic turn following the release of an official medical report from ELWA Hospital which is in the possession of Verity News.
The repor contradicts claims that he poured hot oil on alleged victim Momoh David. The findings suggest a potential orchestrated smear campaign aimed at tarnishing Shio’s reputation.
On February 19, 2025, the Monrovia City Court received the official medical report from ELWA Hospital after issuing a writ of subpoena duces tecum. The report, signed by Dr. Juvenal Musavuli Maghuta, Consultant Surgeon, challenges earlier allegations that David was tortured with hot oil by Shio on January 13, 2025.
The medical report reveals that David was admitted to ELWA Hospital on January 17, 2025, at 11:41 PM—four days after the alleged attack. A medical assessment determined that the injuries were caused by fire, not hot oil. Furthermore, the burns occurred approximately 24 hours before David’s hospital admission, meaning he was injured around January 16, not January 13, when the alleged attack by Shio was said to have taken place. These findings directly contradict the narrative promoted by some individuals, raising concerns about potential manipulation of the legal system.
Despite these inconsistencies, reports persisted that Shio tortured David. However, police records show that on January 13 at 9:00 AM, David was caught stealing a solar panel from Shio’s construction site opposite RC Lawson School. He was taken to Zone 3 Police Station by 10:30 AM, making it impossible for him to have been held captive for three days, as initially claimed. Additionally, in a February 17, 2025, interview on Spoon TV, David admitted to being taken to the police station on the same day of the alleged assault, contradicting his earlier statements. This apparent spread of falsehoods led to public outrage and legal action against Shio, despite medical evidence disproving the allegations.
Further investigations into David’s background reveal a pattern of criminal activity and repeated encounters with mob justice. On January 10, 2025, he was allegedly caught stealing wires from a Lone Star Tower and beaten by a mob, with the incident recorded at Zone 3 Police Station. The following day, January 11, he was again assaulted after being caught stealing near Sando Cooper’s residence in Congo Town. On January 12, he was tortured by a mob after another theft attempt and was brought to Zone 3 Police Station but managed to escape while being taken for medical treatment. On January 13, he was again caught stealing a solar panel at Michael Shio’s construction site. These repeated incidents suggest that David’s burns were likely the result of a separate fire-related incident rather than an attack by Shio.
The ELWA Hospital report, issued in response to a writ of subpoena duces tecum, provided critical details about David’s injuries. He was admitted to the hospital with a partial-thickness thermal burn covering approximately 23 percent of his body, affecting his face, neck, upper limbs, and torso. The burns were determined to have been caused by fire and had occurred about 24 hours before he arrived at the hospital. Medical care, including tetanus anti-toxin, fluid resuscitation, pain management, and infection prevention, was provided immediately. David remained hospitalized for 14 days and was discharged on February 1, 2025. The report noted that the long-term impact of the burns would be evaluated over time to determine whether complications would be permanent or temporary.
As part of the legal proceedings, the Monrovia City Court, under Associate Magistrate Cllr. Andrew N. Bropleh, issued a writ of subpoena duces tecum to ELWA Hospital, demanding David’s medical records. The court warned that failure to provide the requested documents would result in contempt charges. With the medical report contradicting David’s allegations, questions arise about possible political or personal motives behind the claims.
While the public awaits further legal action as Shio’s legal team challenges the allegations in court, the matter has been taken to the plenary of the House of Representatives, raising concerns about why the House is getting involved in a case before the court. It is evident that a court ruling will ultimately settle the matter—either finding Shio guilty or exonerating him.
However, with the House intervening in the case, critics question whether there is a hidden agenda behind the unfolding events. Some speculate that a powerful figure may be orchestrating a plot against Shio. Meanwhile, reports suggest that another Chinese national involved in the mining industry is using financial influence to undermine Shio, adding another layer of complexity to the case.
The unfolding case of Momoh David vs. Michael Shio raises serious concerns about misinformation, judicial fairness, and the potential for fabricated accusations to damage reputations. As the legal battle continues, all eyes remain on how the Monrovia City Court will handle this high-profile case to ensure that justice prevails.
