“Medical Services No Longer Fully Free at Government Hospitals”-Rivercess CHO Announces

The County Health Officer (CHO) assigned at St. Francis Hospital, Dr. Ujaye Karnga, has disclosed that beginning August 1, 2025, medical services at government hospitals will no longer be completely free of charge.

Speaking during a recent citizens’ engagement meeting, Dr. Karnga explained that the Ministry of Health is introducing this policy to ensure the sustainability of Liberia’s public healthcare system.

He stressed that the introduction of partial charges will encourage individuals to take greater personal responsibility for their health needs. According to him, some people misuse the free services by constantly visiting hospitals even when they are not genuinely ill.

“The aim is to reduce unnecessary visits and ease the burden on healthcare workers,” Dr. Karnga stated. “Many people come to the hospital just to check for minor issues that could be resolved at home, thereby congesting the system and delaying care for those with severe conditions.”

However, the announcement has sparked concerns among community members who fear that the new policy could undermine access to timely healthcare, especially for the poor and vulnerable.

“This is risky for the community,” said one resident at the meeting. “Health authorities have been encouraging us to visit hospitals whenever we feel unwell. Now, with fees attached, some people may choose to stay home even when they are seriously sick.”

Several citizens argued that introducing minimal fees could reverse the gains made in promoting health-seeking behavior in rural communities, where economic challenges already limit access to quality care.

As the August 1 implementation date approaches, many are calling on the Ministry of Health to reconsider or clearly define the nature of the charges to avoid endangering public health in Rivercess County and beyond.
