To ensure workplace wellness, the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) launched its first-ever psychosocial and Counselling Centre to provide mental health and emotional support for its staff. Developed in partnership with The Carter Center and the Ministry of Health, this in-house facility offers counseling, mental health advice, and psychosocial care services.
The center’s launch aligns with the LRA’s mission to create a resilient and healthy workforce while pursuing its ambitious billion-dollar revenue target. With the new facility, the LRA becomes the first public institution in Liberia to establish an in-house mental health support center for employees, setting a precedent for other organizations across the country.
At the launch event, Commissioner General James Dorbor Jallah emphasized the critical role of mental health in building a productive work environment, urging employees to utilize the center’s services. “Mental well-being is essential to personal and professional success,” Jallah remarked. “We want to ensure our team has the tools to manage stress, anxiety, and personal challenges so they can continue contributing to our mission. Supporting mental health is not just a benefit—it’s a necessity for achieving our objectives.”
Health Minister Dr. Louise Kpoto praised the initiative and called it a significant advancement for employee welfare in Liberia. She expressed her admiration for the LRA’s forward-thinking approach to mental health support and urged other institutions to consider similar measures to enhance the well-being of their staff.
Representing The Carter Center, the Senior Country Representative of the Liberia Mental Health Program and Africa Lead, also commended the LRA’s commitment to creating a supportive work environment. “This center represents a shift in how we view employee well-being, recognizing that mental health is foundational to both personal and organizational resilience,” the representative noted, pledging ongoing support from The Carter Center for the LRA’s mental health initiatives.
The establishment of the Psychosocial and Counseling Center is part of a broader LRA commitment to addressing the holistic needs of its workforce. Staff members will have access to trained mental health professionals who can provide tailored support, from managing day-to-day stress to addressing deeper mental health concerns.
The initiative has also sparked dialogue around workplace wellness across Liberia, with the LRA encouraging other organizations to recognize the importance of mental health. Through the hashtag #MyMentalHealthAtWorkMatters, the LRA is helping to destigmatize mental health support in professional settings and hopes to inspire other institutions to prioritize their employees’ cognitive and emotional well-being.
With this centre, the LRA aims to support its staff and demonstrate the value of investing in employees’ mental health. In establishing this space, the LRA has taken a critical step toward fostering a resilient, focused, and motivated workforce equipped to meet personal and professional challenges.
