The Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP), through its Department of Budget, has launched a six-day Budget Execution Workshop aimed at strengthening public financial management and improving the implementation of Liberia’s national budget.
Declaring the workshop open, Deputy Minister for Budget and Development Planning, Hon. Tanneh G. Brumson, emphasized the critical role of effective budget execution in advancing national development priorities.
She told participants that the national budget “is more than just figures on paper; it reflects the country’s priorities under ongoing reform frameworks,” stressing that its success depends on how well it is implemented.
According to the MFDP, timely, transparent, and disciplined execution remains essential to achieving intended outcomes. “Without effective implementation, even the best plans will not deliver results,” the Ministry noted.
The workshop comes at a crucial time as Liberia advances the implementation of its 2026 national budget alongside key reforms under the Public Financial Management Act of 2009 and efforts to strengthen compliance with the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework. These reforms, the Ministry stated, are designed to improve budget credibility by better aligning approval, allotment, and execution processes.
Participants are expected to address persistent challenges in areas such as procurement, cash management, and project implementation, while also enhancing coordination across government ministries and agencies.
The initiative seeks to ensure that allocated resources translate into tangible development outcomes in critical sectors including health, education, infrastructure, and social services.
The Ministry further described the workshop as “a practical platform for collaboration and reform,” encouraging participants to share experiences and propose workable solutions to improve budget execution.
For his part, Grand Bassa County Budget Officer, Hon. Mark Alonso Willis, welcomed participants on behalf of Superintendent Hon. Karyou Johnson and the county administration. He expressed appreciation for hosting the workshop and underscored the importance of greater inclusion of county-level budget officers in national budget processes.
The six-day training is expected to strengthen the capacity of budget practitioners and reinforce accountability, transparency, and efficiency in the execution of Liberia’s national budget.
