Mining Mafia? Walter McCarthy Accused of Sabotage and Corruption

Monrovia, Liberia – Explosive allegations have surfaced implicating a prominent mining figure, Mr. Walter McCarthy, in what is being described as a calculated and dangerous conspiracy to undermine ongoing reforms in Liberia’s mining sector.

A leaked document obtained by this paper reveals a scathing denunciation of Mr. McCarthy and his accomplices accusing them of orchestrating a corrupt scheme aimed at derailing the efforts of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, and specifically targeting senior officials who have resisted their alleged influence.

According to the document, McCarthy, who is often portrayed as a powerful mining syndicate leader is accused of using his connections within high-ranking political circles, including the Legislature and even members of the First Family, to exert pressure on the Ministry. His alleged goal is to install loyalists within the ministry and regain control over critical decisions affecting Liberia’s lucrative mineral sector.

“This is no ordinary political power play,” the leaked document revealed. “It is a deliberate act of sabotage, aimed at hijacking national resources for personal gain.”

Ministers Targeted

The document named high-ranking officials at the Ministry of Mines as key targets of McCarthy’s alleged campaign, citing their refusal to comply with what was described as “corrupt dictates and self-serving agenda.”

“Walter McCarthy is no advocate for reform. He is a man consumed by greed. His actions have threatened the very integrity of our mining governance,” the leaked document stated.

Heavy Mineral Sand Licenses Controversy

Central to the allegations is McCarthy’s alleged role in the abrupt cancellation of all Heavy Mineral Sand (HMS) mining licenses in 2024, a move critic now claim was designed to clear the field for his own interests under the guise of reform. The statement describes the cancellation as “outrageous and unprincipled,” carried out not in the public interest but for his monopolistic ambition.

A Call for Investigation

The document also iterated a strong call to action, urging President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, the Legislature, the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), and the General Auditing Commission (GAC) to immediately launch a full-scale investigation into:

The cancellation of HMS mining licenses;

McCarthy’s alleged policy interference;

The plot to unseat reform-minded ministry officials;

“Double Dipping” Accusation Against loyalists of McCarthy.

One of McCarthy’s accomplices, Sumo Momodu, identified in the leaked document as McCarthy’s “most dangerous surrogate,” is accused of illegally drawing a government salary while simultaneously serving as a full-time staff at the University of Liberia. The document labels this a “clear violation of national financial and civil service laws,” calling it both unethical and criminal.

Strong Backing for Reformers

“We reject and denounce in the strongest terms the schemes of Walter McCarthy and his corrupt cohorts. Liberia’s mineral wealth must benefit the Liberian people, not a coterie of well-connected individuals plotting in the shadows,” the document stated.

This unfolding scandal has sparked widespread concern, with calls growing louder for transparency and accountability in the handling of Liberia’s mineral resources. Verity News will continue to follow this developing story.
