Ministry of Agriculture Requests US$50 Million for 2025’s National Budget

The Ministry of Agriculture is proposing USD 50 million to be allotted in its 2025 budgetary allotment. The request is meant to boost food production and empower farmers in Liberia. J. Alexander Nueteh, Liberia’s Minister of Agriculture, revealed during a regular press briefing at the Ministry of Information and Cultural Affairs (MICAT) that the Ministry is seeking a budgetary allocation of USD 50 million for the fiscal year 2025. This funding aims to implement the National Agricultural Plan and empower local farmers, particularly those involved in rice production.

He highlighted the future impact of this investment, stating that it would enable the cultivation of over 50,000 hectares of agricultural produce, with a strong focus on boosting rice production. The proposal has been formally presented to the Legislative Branch, which comprises 103 lawmakers, seeking their support for this funding.

Addressing the press on Tuesday, Minister Nueteh further revealed the increased interest from investors in cassava processing, although the identity of those investors remains undisclosed. This development is expected to enhance income for local farmers engaged in cassava cultivation.

Additionally, to further support agricultural initiatives, Minister Nueteh revealed that USD 1.6 million has been allocated for land development to one hundred and thirty-nine (139) farmers across four counties: Bong, Gbarpolu, Margibi, and Montserrado.

Meanwhile, he noted that contracts have already been signed with those 139 farmers under the Emergency Rice Production Agency, a subset of the Ministry of Agriculture aimed at addressing food security challenges.

This proposed budget boost is not just a financial request; it represents a strategic commitment to transform Liberia’s agricultural landscape. By prioritizing local production and reducing reliance on imports, the government aims to ensure food security and improve livelihoods for farmers across the nation.

As Liberia grapples with economic challenges and high inflation rates, this initiative could be a significant step toward sustainable agricultural development and economic resilience. The Ministry of Agriculture’s efforts reflect a broader vision to unlock the country’s agricultural potential and empower its people through enhanced productivity and self-sufficiency.
