Ministry of Education Commemorates International Day of the African Child

The Ministry of Education on Monday joined the rest of the African continent in observing the International Day of the African Child, a day set aside to recognize the strength, rights, and potential of African children while renewing commitments to their protection and empowerment.

Celebrated annually on June 16, the day serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by young students during the 1976 Soweto Uprising in South Africa and calls on African nations to continue prioritizing the rights and well-being of children.

This year’s commemoration was held under the theme: “Planning and Budgeting for Children’s Rights: Progress Since 2010.” The theme highlights the need for targeted investments in children’s education, health, and social services to foster inclusive and supportive environments where all children can thrive.

Speaking in observance of the day, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to building an equitable and inclusive education system in Liberia. Through strategic planning, policy development, and collaboration with local and international partners, the Ministry continues to work toward ensuring that every Liberian child has access to quality education and a safe, nurturing learning environment.

“The Government of Liberia acknowledges the progress made since 2010,” the Ministry noted in a statement. “We are determined to scale up our efforts and adapt to the evolving needs of today’s children, ensuring that no child is left behind.”

As part of its education agenda, the Ministry emphasized its focus on learner-centered approaches that uphold dignity and opportunity for all, regardless of background or circumstance.

The Ministry’s observance of the International Day of the African Child reflects Liberia’s ongoing dedication to nurturing the future of its youngest citizens through education, inclusion, and rights-based development.
