The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, June 12, received a high-level courtesy visit from an advance delegation of the African Union’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS), alongside civil society partner Messengers of Peace-Liberia Inc. (MOP). The delegation was led by Liberia’s Global Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS) Expert, Gwendolyn Myers.
The visit marked the official launch of the African Union’s Pre-Assessment Mission to Liberia, aimed at evaluating logistical and technical preparations for the upcoming Youth Strategy Forum on Peacebuilding and the Right to Development, set to take place in Monrovia later this year.
Organized by Messengers of Peace in partnership with the AU, through its Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (PCRD) policy under PAPS, the forum will convene youth leaders and stakeholders across Africa to discuss sustainable peacebuilding strategies. The event will also feature a Quick Impact Project emphasizing the right to development as a cornerstone of lasting peace.
The delegation was formally received by Deputy Minister for Legal Affairs, Cllr. Jeddi Armah, and Assistant Minister/Chief of Staff, Hon. Saran Kaba Jones. Both officials welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed the Ministry’s full support for the mission.
“The Government of Liberia remains firmly committed to youth empowerment, inclusive governance, and advancing peace and development across the continent,” the Ministry stated in an official release.
The Ministry also lauded Messengers of Peace-Liberia Inc. for its leadership and coordination of the mission, underscoring Liberia’s role in fostering local civil society partnerships and enhancing regional cooperation.
The forthcoming forum is expected to serve as a key platform for shaping youth-led policy recommendations and strengthening continental strategies for peacebuilding and development.
