Ministry of Gender Launches 16 Days of Activism, Announces National GBV Conference

By Staff Writer

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection today held a press conference marking the official start of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, reaffirming Liberia’s commitment to ending violence against women and children.

Speaking during the briefing, the Assistant Minister underscored the urgency of strengthening national efforts to address gender-based violence (GBV).

She highlighted the need for sustained action, improved accountability systems, and increased support for institutions and community structures that provide services to survivors.

As part of this year’s national activities, the Ministry announced that it will host the National Conference on Gender-Based Violence on Tuesday, November 25.

The event will begin with a parade that will end at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (EJS) Ministerial Complex, where the conference will officially open.

According to the Ministry, the conference will convene a wide range of participants, including national and international stakeholders, development partners, civil society organizations, and community representatives.

The gathering aims to foster dialogue and collaboration on strategies to reduce GBV in all its forms and strengthen protection systems for women and children.

The Assistant Minister stressed that combating GBV requires a coordinated, long-term commitment: “We must ensure that accountability mechanisms are not only strengthened but enforced, and that survivors receive the support they deserve.”

The 16 Days of Activism campaign, which runs annually from November 25 to December 10, focuses on raising awareness, mobilizing collective action, and calling for policy reforms to end violence against women and girls.

This year’s launch signals a renewed national push toward creating safer communities and advancing gender equality across Liberia.
