In response to escalating tensions between residents and two mining companies in Wainsue Mining District, Bong County, the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) has successfully concluded a conflict resolution meeting designed to address the disputes.
The gathering took place in Gbakonia town on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, and was led by Assistant Minister of Mines and Energy, Carlos E. Tingban, Sr. It brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from Da-Tang Mining Inc., H&K Mining Company, community members, and local government officials.
The recent strife has largely revolved around allegations from the local populace, particularly the residents of Zota Wolapolu, who claim that H&K Mining Company has encroached on their territory, disrupting their livelihoods.
These residents assert that they have been conducting their activities legally under the purview of Da-Tang Mining Company, expressing concerns over a perceived infringement of their rights as well as the negative impact on their daily activities.s

In light of these claims, the local community has actively sought intervention from the Ministry, leading to the convening of this crucial meeting.
Assistant Minister Tingban addressed the media following the discussions, clarifying the Ministry’s stance on the ongoing conflicts.
He emphasized that both mining companies possess operational licenses that are legitimate and recognized by the government, albeit with distinct classifications under existing mining regulations.
Tingban explained that H&K Mining Company operates under a valid exploration permit, which restricts them to exploring mineral potentials rather than engaging in full-scale mining operations.
Conversely, Da-Tang Mining Inc. holds a mining license that allows for the extraction of minerals in the area.
The Assistant Minister highlighted the necessity for both companies to operate strictly within the confines of their respective permits, ensuring that their activities do not infringe upon the rights of the local community.
Furthermore, Tingban reassured the Gbakonai community of the Ministry’s commitment to maintaining transparency, legality, and fairness within the mining sector.
He underscored the importance of ongoing dialogue between the local companies and the community, suggesting that progress and development should not occur at the expense of peace or environmental safety.
Looking ahead, the MME anticipates that H&K Mining Company will initiate full-scale extraction operations in Gbakonai, Electoral District Four, following the resolution of these disputes.
The Ministry plans to closely monitor the activities of both mining firms to prevent further conflict and ensure adherence to national mining laws.
This resolution meeting marks a significant step in addressing the tensions in the Wainsue Mining District, with hopes of fostering a cooperative environment that balances local community needs with the operational objectives of mining companies.
As the situation develops, continued oversight and engagement from the Ministry will be crucial to safeguarding the interests of both the residents and the mining entities involved.
