MOE Highlights Teacher Empowerment at MasterCard Foundation Workshop

Monrovia, Liberia—Education Minister Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah has emphasized the importance of supporting and empowering Liberian educators.

The Liberian Education Minister made these remarks on Monday, October 28, 2024, during the MasterCard Foundation’s Leaders in Teaching (LIT) initiative workshop in Liberia.

Dr. Jallah extolled the MasterCard Foundation and the Education Development Centre (EDC) for their investment in teacher development, which she described as crucial for creating a brighter future for Liberia’s youth.

She highlighted the Ministry’s key priorities to strengthen the education system, starting with the professional development of teachers and administrators.

This includes training, certification, and support programs designed to enhance teachers’ qualifications and ensure they meet the demands of modern education.

The education minister acknowledged the numerous challenges teachers face, such as large class sizes and limited instructional materials, while stressing the need for improvements in the teaching field to boost teacher motivation and retention.

She emphasized the significance of inclusive education, particularly for girls and students with special needs, inspiring to ensure safe and supportive learning environments for all.

Dr. Jallah pushed to establish and maintain safe, functional learning spaces and integrate technology to enhance educational delivery.

She also emphasized providing adequate instructional supplies to foster engaging classroom environments.

The Minister further underscored the importance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in preparing students for the workforce, contributing to Liberia’s economic growth.

Additionally, she pointed out the need for effective monitoring and evaluation of teaching and school management, which is essential for maintaining educational quality.

Dr. Jallah disclosed the ministry’s plan to initiate school feeding programs and establish school gardens, which aim to foster healthy eating habits among children.

The Liberian Education Minister is calling on educational stakeholders to collaborate on developing a comprehensive proposal that supports teachers and creates an environment where they can thrive.

The education minister further expressed profound gratitude to the MasterCard Foundation and EDC. She expressed optimism for a future where Liberia’s education system empowers every student and supports every teacher.

The workshop marks a critical step in enhancing Liberia’s educational landscape, ensuring educators can provide quality learning experiences for all students.
